About the Department

1. History of Education Department

Prof. Bijoy Krishna Bhattacharyya was an academic visionary who felt  the need of the society was to gain knowledge. Moreover, he felt the need of women  education . The outcome of his progressive thought led to the introduction of the subject ,”Education “ as a full – fledged Honours faculty in the year 1965 -66.The department started its  journey from August, 1966 with Prof. Sabita GuhaMazumdar , Gita Dutta and  Purnima Mukherjee as teaching faculty . After Dr Sabita Guha Mazumdar’s retirement ,  Dr. Nargis Sattar joined the department as a full-time teaching faculty. She  was followed by  Prof. Bulbul Ghosh  who joined college in the year 1983 and in the year 1999 Dr. Maksuda Khatun joined college in the post of Prof. Purnima Mukherjee.

 Within a short period, the department earned the fame of quality teaching in district level and the state level as well. Smt. Soma Ghosh  joined as a part time Lecturer in the department in the year 1996  

In the year 2000, Smt. Radha Ghosh joined college in  Prof. Sabita Guha Mazumdars post  and in the year 2001 Dr. Anwesha Acharya joined the department in  Dr Nargis Sattar’s post. Smt Shanta Dasgupta joined college as a part time Lecturer in the year 2001. Dr Maksuda Katun left the department and joined as principal at Calcutta Girls B.T college. Two new Assistant Professor’s , Sri Chrinjib Saha  and Smt. Papiya SamantaBag joined in the year 2014 and  2017 subsequently in the department of education in place of Prof Bulbul Ghosh and Maksuda Khatun respectably. Soma Ghosh, Shanta Dasgupta and  Papiya Bag are alumnus of the department.

Our department happened to be a well known centre for its academic excellence, regularity of classes and other daily disciplinary activities. In addition to it, the department is now equipped with all modern teaching tools and techniques…i.e. computers , projectors, internet facilities with WIFI connections (UGC and other grants). There is a seminar library, rich with contemporary books (texts and references) and journals. The department follow CBCS  syllabus as directed by University of Calcutta.   The students after graduating from this department have achieved their desired goals in academics,scientific research,  and many other dynamic fields. The University results are encouraging every year. Failure rate is almost insignificant. We always work together with the motto ‘work today for better tomorrow’.

2. Mission

  Our mission is to provide education not only to acquire knowledge but also to inculcate a sound philosophy for holistic living. We also want to make the classes truly interactive and student-centric to the utmost extent possible.

The number of students in the class should be  manageable on the one hand and  regularity of attendance is to be made mandatory  on the other hand to make a proper judgement of the students accomplishment in teaching - learning situation.

 Students should be encouraged for self evaluation and  personality development and proper guidance should be provided so that the students  strive towards perfection and competence.

The Department of Education strives to provide excellent teaching and learning environment with its focus on continuing education.

3. Vision

 Our vision is to make learning a continuous process and an enjoyable experience. Thedepartment, with its limited autonomy, cannot drastically turn things around, but it can experiment with more student – centric learning.

Our aim is to  impart quality education for Education of rural and economically weaker students.

 We try to create interest among students  to opt for Education as a major subject in higher education thus making  the students creative and research oriented which can help raise the standard of our students to global levels and make them employable by  providing  a platform to the students to exhibit  their talents and creativity.
