About the Department

 

  1. History of Dept.:- Established in 21.01.1948, the department of History was one of the earliest departments of the college. There were many illustrious professors who made this subject interesting and the department popular. Today it enjoys one of the largest student strength. The department regularly organises tutorial and remedial classes; extension lectures, educational tours, museum visits, workshops, with active interaction of the pupil and faculty. With the objective of enhancing various capabilities of the students the department arranges micro teaching sessions, student’s seminars, and history quiz and debates. The department also conducts parent-teachers meeting on a regular basis to facilitate communication between stakeholders.

 

  1. Mission & Vision :- 
  • The mission of this department is to primarily develop a ‘sense of history’ among its students.
  • In a thriving democratic country like ours which has a rich ancient past, it is important to study it in the most objective manner possible to enable students to understand the present, and develop a critical foresight about the future.
  • We seek to inspire interest in museums, archeological sites, and in libraries as sources of knowledge along with classroom teaching, and make the students aware of our cultural heritage.
  • To impart the new CBCS syllabus in a lucid manner and make learning informative and enjoyable amongst the students.
  • Promote interaction between student-teacher for all-round betterment.

  • It boasts of a rich departmental library to facilitate students’ learning.
  • It has a collection of display objects for the study of cultural history.

 

5. Future Plan: -

  • To develop a local museum with the purpose of showcasing the cultural heritage of Howrah.
  • To launch a departmental journal.

  1. Achievement :-
  • Over the years the department has successfully organised various UGC-CPE sponsored national and international seminars, notably on ‘Voices of Protest’‘Perspectives on the Early Medieval History of India’ and ‘Reappraising the Partition of India’.
  • The department has collaborated with other departments to organize conferences on the Gandhian philosophy and socio-political thought of Vivekananda.
  • In its effort to archive local history the department has participated in an inter-disciplinary consortium on ‘The History and Culture of the District of Howrah’.
  • The department also has to its credit several publications.
